Congressman Kim, Rev. William E. Greene Jr., and Local Black Leaders Highlight Importance of Juneteenth in New Video,

Calls for National Holiday

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) was joined by local leaders in the Black community throughout Burlington and Ocean Counties in a video highlighting the importance of Juneteenth, and New Jersey’s history in the fight to end slavery. Congressman Kim also announced that he has signed on as a co-sponsor of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, which would formally make Juneteenth a national holiday.

Congressman Kim is joined in the video by Rev. William E. Greene Jr of the Second Baptist Church of Toms River; Guy Weston, President of the Timbuctoo Historical Society; Bahiyyah Abdullah, President of the Toms River NAACP; and Rev. Terrell W. Person of Jacob’s Chapel AME Church of Mount Laurel.

“Today isn’t just about celebrating the end of slavery in America, it’s about rededicating ourselves to the fight to end systemic racism and inequality,” said Congressman Kim. “Our own communities were home to stops on the Underground Railroad and to men and women who fought and died in the cause to end slavery. Today, those same communities are home to men and women who are standing up, speaking out, and marching to end injustice. I hope everyone can take a moment today to reflect on our history, and the change still needed in our future.”

Congressman Kim is a co-sponsor of the Justice in Policing Act, which would provide critical reforms that address ongoing issues impacting law enforcement and communities of color with the aim of greater public safety. In the past weeks, Congressman Kim has joined peaceful demonstrations calling for justice for George Floyd, has held a virtual forum on discrimination and bias, and has met with Black community leaders to hear their concerns and discuss solutions on police reform and other critical issues. In the coming weeks, the Congressman will be holding additional listening sessions and convenings to elevate the voices and issues of the Black community in Burlington and Ocean Counties.

Congressman Kim is a member of the bipartisan House Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis, where he serves as one of twelve members of the House tasked with conducting oversight over programs aimed at ending the Coronavirus pandemic and helping address the economic impact it’s having on the American people. Congressman Kim is also a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Small Business. More information about Congressman Kim can be found on his website by visiting... https://kim.house.gov/

Community Town Hall Meetings with Senator Andy Kim

July 30, 2019

I want to invite you to three town halls I’m holding during the month of August.

The first will be on August 4th at 4pm at Second Baptist Church of Toms River, located at 2 1st Street in Toms River. The second will be on August 14th at 6pm at Fire Station 303 at 1020 Neck Road in Burlington Township. And the third will be on August 29th at 5:30pm at Lacey Middle School at 660 Denton Ave in Forked River.

Our town halls haven’t just been opportunities for me to hear from you, they’ve been the source of ideas I’ve brought back to Washington to fight for people in our community. It doesn’t matter if it’s making life more affordable for working families by lowering prescription drug costs or holding the government accountable when they’re not being transparent to our communities, I take my cues from you, and I look forward to continuing the conversation in August.

These are my ninth, tenth and eleventh town halls, and part of my monthly series to hear directly from you. I want to thank South Toms River, Burlington Township and Lacey Township for hosting our town halls. I look forward to hearing from our neighbors across Burlington and Ocean Counties.

Sincerely,

Andy Kim

Member of Congress

Second Baptist Church of Toms River

FAMILY CHRISTMAS EVE MEDITATION

Rev. William A. Greene, Jr., D.Min.

Purpose: The purpose of this meditation is to spiritually unite the family through the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The head of household is empowered to serve as priest of their family through leading their family in the reading of scripture and prayer.

Instructions: The meditation should be incorporated into the family’s traditional evening activities for Christmas Eve. The family is seated around the kitchen or dining room table. The head of household begins the meditation with prayer. The participants then are asked to read aloud a portion of scripture, rotating around the table, ending with the head of household. The family joins hands and repeats the Lord’s Prayer. The head of household will lead their family in the singing of a Christmas hymn.

Order of Meditation

Head of Household: Our family is grateful for the coming of Jesus Christ and shows our love by celebrating His birth. Let us pray.

Prayer

Head of Household: The prophecy of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Old Testament is as follows: Isaiah 9:6,7

Family Scripture Readings:

  • Luke 1:26-38

  • Matthew 1:18-25

  • Luke 2:1-7

  • Luke 2:8-20

Head of Household: Just as the angel announced unto the shepherds, they also announce unto this family – “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” During Jesus’ ministry he proclaimed, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Jesus paid our debt for sin and by God raising Him from the dead provided for us everlasting life.

Head of Household: Let us join hands as a family and repeat the Lord’s Prayer.

Head of Household: Let us celebrate our salvation by singing.

Second Baptist Church of Toms River Christmas Greeting

Second Baptist Church of Toms River Christmas Greeting

Greetings in the Name of Jesus Christ:

In ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas” television show, Charlie Brown ask the question, “Is there anyone who can tell me what Christmas is all about?” Linus says, “Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.” Linus walks over and takes center stage and says to a distraught Charlie Brown: “In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” (Luke 2:8-14). Then Linus says, “That’s what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown.”

Christmas is a time of joy, praise, and celebration for IMMANUEL, God with us, has come. Elizabeth and Mary were filled with the Holy Spirit and the baby John “leaped in Elizabeth’s womb” in the presence of the baby Jesus. Mary and Joseph celebrated that a child was born to them. Shepherds celebrated that they were visited by a heavenly choir. Three wise men from the East followed a star to Bethlehem where they “were overwhelmed with joy” and worshipped the child Jesus. Simeon celebrated when Jesus was brought to him for circumcision ,”Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples. (Luke 228-32, NRSV)

Christmas is a time of joy, praise and celebration, “For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

On Christmas Eve take time for celebration and to give thanks, by participating in the Family Christmas Eve Meditation. Celebrate Jesus the Messiah who has come to deliver us! “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.” (Isaiah 9:2-4, NRSV)

May God our Father who has given us Jesus bless your family in this sacred season of Christmas. “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”

Community Leaders Offered Police Training

Community Leaders Offered Police Training to Better Understand How It Works

Updated January 26, 2017 8:57 PM

Rev. William Greene participates in the Ocean County police training simulator. It was part of a program to allow community leaders to learn how police officers are trained. (1/26/17)

LAKEWOOD - Several Ocean County community and religious leaders were given the opportunity to partake in police training exercises in order to gain a better understanding of how police officers operate.

Dr. Mohamed Nabeel Elmasry, chairman of the Muslim Society of Jersey Shore, and the Rev. William Greene, pastor at the Second Baptist Church of Toms River, participated in a firearm training simulator to see what officers must deal with in various situations.

“To just get a feel for what the officer experiences in the use of deadly force,” says Green. “You can explain to the community what you felt.”

The Ocean County prosecutor says that he hopes that they take the lessons they learned back to their communities so they can all understand what police officers must go through.

“I think this brings reality. They get to see the different circumstances that a police officer would be facing, and the split-second decision making that is necessary to whether use force or not use force,” says Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato.

The participants say that they were also interested in learning about the process of investigating police-related shootings, especially how long the process can take.
